What it does
The top housing caps the valve and carries the threaded union that joins it to the plumbing. The union is what lets the valve be broken out for service without cutting pipe, and it is also where a housing usually shows its age: a hairline crack around the union threads, or a weep that no amount of retightening cures.
Fitting it
Once a plastic housing is cracked it is replaced rather than repaired. While the valve is open, renew any o-ring or gasket that was disturbed, since a new housing sealing against a flattened old seal simply moves the leak.
