The quickest way to tell them apart is the housing cover that sits over the impeller: the ridges running out from the center hole are straight on the old style and curved on the new style. This R0536700 is the new style part, covering pumps after serial number PB120111001, manufactured from 2011 to current. If your cover has straight ridges, the part you need is the P10 motor bracket.
What it does
The backplate carries the motor and closes the back of the wet end. It is what everything else in the pump bolts to, so a cracked or corroded backplate means the pump cannot hold alignment or seal.
While it is apart
The backplate o-ring and the mechanical shaft seal are both accessible on the same job and are separate parts. Fitting fresh ones now avoids opening the pump twice.
