What the face ring does
The face ring is the outer trim that pulls the lens and its gasket down onto the light housing. It looks like a cosmetic piece, and it is the part people notice when it has gone chalky or cracked, but its real job is clamping pressure. Even clamping is what makes the lens gasket seal.
Why it fails, and what to do about it
Rings crack around the screw bosses, go brittle in the sun on a light that spends time out of the water, or get broken during a lamp change. Once a ring cannot pull the lens down evenly, the fixture is on borrowed time. Replace the lens gasket while the light is open, because a fresh ring against a gasket that has already taken a set will not restore the seal on its own.
