The Century BN40SS is a 2 HP thru-bolt replacement motor for pool and spa pumps, built on the 48Y frame and wired for 115 V or 230 V single phase. It is also sold under the A.O. Smith name, and it turns 3450 rpm at 60 Hz.
Construction
The shaft is stainless steel, 3/8 in. threaded, 0.500 in. in diameter with a 2.36 in. extension, which is the detail worth paying for on a motor you expect to unbolt from a wet end again in five years. The motor mounts on four thru bolts on a 5.146 in. bolt circle with 48 and 56 base mounting and a rigid base. Overall length is 13.33 in. and frame length is 8.50 in. Bearings are sealed ball at both ends.
Electrical
Capacitor start, induction run, single or dual voltage, two poles, rotation counterclockwise looking at the pump end. Current draw is 10.0 A at 230 V and 20.0 A at 115 V. The enclosure is open drip proof, insulation is class B, the motor is thermally protected and rated for continuous duty at 40 C ambient. It is a UL 1081 design, UL recognized and CSA certified.
Before you order
Check the frame and the service factor on the motor you are replacing. This is a 48Y frame motor with a service factor of 1, so a wet end matched to an up rated motor is a different pairing. Conduit entries at 12 and 3 o clock and a 3-1/2 in. shaft height let you route the feed from either side of the pad.
