What the front roller does
The roller at the leading edge is what the cleaner pushes against as it walks across the pool. It sets how the body sits, how much grip the cleaner has, and whether it holds a line or drifts. When the roller wears down or goes hard, the cleaner starts sliding rather than crawling, misses parts of the floor, and loses its ability to work slopes and walls.
