Product details

The Hayward AquaBug is a suction side automatic cleaner for above ground pools, sold as part number W3500 and also listed by Hayward as the 500. It runs on the suction the pool already has, so nothing extra has to be plumbed or powered.

How it works

The cleaner connects at the skimmer or a dedicated suction line and is driven by the filtration system. Debris travels up the hose and into the pool filter, which is why there is no bag on the machine to empty or replace. Hayward drives it with a programmed steering pattern it calls SmartDrive, so the cleaner works a deliberate path rather than bouncing around at random.

What it is good at

Suction cleaners of this kind are aimed at fine dirt, small leaves and twigs, the everyday load in pools in dry and tropical settings. Because the cleaner pulls water from the floor as it travels, it also acts like a main drain that moves, which helps circulation and keeps chemistry more even through the pool.

Setting it up

The hoses are included, so the cleaner is complete in the box. Hayward puts the installation at ten minutes or less, either through the skimmer or on a dedicated suction line, and it does not call for tools.
