The Intermatic PF1102 is a freeze protection thermostat for 240 volt pool and spa equipment: it switches the pump, and a heater, on when the outdoor air falls below its dial setting, carries a 3 HP at 240 VAC rating, and comes in a Type 3R rainproof metal enclosure.

What it does

The thermostat reads the air temperature where the control is mounted. Below the setpoint it turns the pump on so water keeps moving through the plumbing in freezing weather, and off again once the air warms about 5 degrees F above the setting. Intermatic's technical data lists a 33 to 42 degrees F range, while the instruction manual describes the dial as 32 to 45 degrees F. Intermatic also lists it for pond, fountain and marina equipment.

How it fits your system

PF1102 is the thermostat only, built to work alongside a time switch or other switching device: the timer runs the daily schedule and the freeze control turns the pump on in cold weather. The manual covers wiring to Intermatic 240 volt time switches and wiring in parallel with older Intermatic switches, other brands, air switches or contactors. For a timer in the same box, choose the PF1102T. The PF1102M is the mechanism alone for Intermatic T10000R, T30000R and T40000R series panels.

Before you install

A qualified person should install it to the NEC and local codes, using copper conductors rated at least 75 C, with the control at least 5 ft from the inside edge of the pool and properly grounded. The enclosure measures 9-5/8 x 5-3/4 x 3-5/8 in. with 1/2 to 3/4 in. knockouts on the bottom, back and sides. Intermatic notes that the control is no substitute for insulation, covers or maintenance, and backs it with a 1 year limited warranty.

Does the Intermatic PF1102 include a timer?
No. PF1102 is the freeze protection thermostat only, designed to be wired to a time switch or other switching device that runs the pump. Intermatic sells the version with a timer as PF1102T.
Will the PF1102 work with my existing time clock?
Intermatic's manual shows the PF1102 wired to an Intermatic 240 volt time switch, and wired in parallel with the line and load terminals of an Intermatic switch made before 1984, another brand of switch, an air switch or a contactor. It runs on 240 volts, 60 Hz only, and is rated 3 HP at 240 VAC.
At what temperature does the PF1102 turn the pump on?
At the temperature set on its dial. Intermatic's technical data lists a 33 to 42 degrees F range while the instruction manual describes the dial as 32 to 45 degrees F, and the pump turns back off when the air warms about 5 degrees F above the setting.
Where should the PF1102 be installed?
Outdoors, preferably next to the switching device it works with and at least 5 ft from the inside edge of the pool, installed by a qualified person to the NEC and local codes with copper conductors rated at least 75 C. If the box gets direct sun most of the day, Intermatic says to run 8 in. of the thermostat capillary tube into an open ended conduit about 10 in. long at the bottom of the enclosure.
