The Hayward SP1026 is a white grate insert that threads into a 1-1/2 inch threaded PVC return fitting. The grate face sits in place of an open port.
Return side only
Hayward is explicit that this fitting is not safe to be used as a suction fitting. Grates that look similar are made for both duties and they are not interchangeable, so if the line you are working on pulls water toward the pump, this is the wrong part. Fit it on a return line only.
Fitting it
It threads directly into the existing 1-1/2 inch threaded PVC, so no adapter or replumbing is involved. Clean the old thread sealant off before you start and the insert will seat square.
