What it is for
Scale builds where the water meets the wall, and once it is hard, chemicals and brushes stop making progress. A pumice stone cuts it mechanically. The block abrades away as it works, which is the point, because a fresh surface keeps meeting the deposit instead of glazing over.
Where not to use it
It is an abrasive, so it belongs on plaster, gunite, concrete and tile only. Do not take it to a vinyl liner, a fiberglass shell or a painted surface, because it will leave marks you cannot undo. If you are unsure what your surface is, test in a spot that does not show.
Getting the best from it
Work wet. Soak the stone, keep the surface wet, and use steady moderate pressure rather than force. Rinse the stone as you go so the removed scale does not sit on the face and stop it cutting.
