What a coupler insert does
A coupler joins a motor shaft to a pump shaft, and the insert is the flexible piece in the middle that carries the drive. It is intentionally the weakest link in the chain. It takes up small misalignments and absorbs the shock of starting, and it wears out over time so that the shafts and bearings on either side of it do not.
When to change it
A tired insert makes noise before it fails outright, usually a rattle or a knock that rises and falls with load. Left long enough it lets go completely, and then the motor runs while the pump does nothing.
