Product details
The Jandy R0554800 is the tie rod for the DEV 48 DE filter, supplied complete with its knob and lock nuts. The tie rod is the piece of hardware that draws the clamp band tight around the split between the two halves of the filter tank.
Why it fails
This is one of the harder working parts on a DE filter and one of the least considered. It is threaded steel hardware in a permanently wet, chemically loaded environment, and it takes real tension every time the tank is opened for a cleaning and closed again. Threads corrode, the knob seizes onto the rod, and a rod that has been cranked down too hard can bow. Once it will not draw down evenly, the band cannot pull the tank halves together and the filter starts weeping at the seam.
Fitting
Because the knob and lock nuts are included, there is nothing to reuse from the old assembly. Seat the tank o-ring properly first, close the band evenly all the way round, then draw the knob down by hand. Even, moderate tension is what seals the tank; force is what bends the next rod.
