What a base does
It is easy to dismiss the base as a plastic tray, but it is what holds the filter outlet and the pump inlet in fixed relation to each other. Once the base cracks and the system starts to rock, the short plumbing run between the two takes all of that movement, and the unions and fittings are what fail next.
When to replace it
Cracks around the mounting bosses, a base that flexes underfoot, or a system that no longer sits level are all reasons to change it. It is a straightforward swap once the pump and tank are unbolted.
