Product details
Lasco 429-010 is a 1 inch PVC slip coupling, slip by slip. It joins two lengths of 1 inch pipe in line, which makes it the fitting you reach for when extending a plumbing run or splicing back into a section you have cut out.
Slip means glued
Both ends are plain sockets, not threads. The pipe slides in and is solvent welded, and the cement chemically fuses the two surfaces so the joint is effectively one piece of PVC rather than a mechanical connection. That is why a properly made slip joint is stronger than the pipe around it, and also why there is no undoing it.
Getting the joint right
Cut the pipe square and deburr the end so it does not scrape the cement out of the socket on the way in. Dry fit the whole run before any glue comes out of the can. Then prime both surfaces, apply cement to both, push home with a quarter turn and hold it for a few seconds, because a fresh joint will try to push itself back apart. Let it cure before you put water pressure on it.
