The Waterway 218-1430 is the white face plate for a steel wall vinyl liner wall fitting, the trim ring that finishes a return on an in-ground vinyl liner pool.
How it works
A vinyl liner wall fitting is a sandwich. The fitting body sits behind the liner, the liner is cut to the opening, and the face plate screws down over the front to squeeze the liner and its gasket against the body. That clamping pressure is the seal, and it is also what stops the cut edge of the vinyl from tearing where the water leaves the wall.
When to replace it
Plates go brittle with age and sunlight and eventually crack around the screw holes. Once the plate is split it no longer pulls the liner down evenly, and water starts finding its way behind the wall. Replacing it is far cheaper than chasing the leak that follows. If the gasket underneath is hard or flattened, change it while the plate is off.
