What it is for
Above ground equipment is plumbed in flexible hose, and the ports on filters and skimmers are threaded. This adapter is the piece in between: it screws into the threaded port and gives the hose a barb to clamp onto.
Installing it
Wrap the pipe thread with PTFE tape, thread it in by hand and give it about one more turn with a wrench. Threaded plastic ports crack when a fitting is driven in hard, and that turns a small repair into a new filter head. On the hose end, push the hose fully over the barb and set the clamp behind the last ridge.
