What an eyeball inlet does

The eyeball sits in the return and pivots, so the water coming back into the pool can be aimed. That aim is what decides whether the pool actually turns over or whether the returned water short cycles straight back toward the skimmer. The slot across the face gives you something to work against while setting it.
