Slotted or directional

The slotted eyeball is the plain return face, which spreads the flow. Aquamoto also builds directional flow versions with a restricted opening in 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch, listed as separate items, and those throw a faster, narrower stream. Which you want depends on whether you are aiming for gentle turnover or a strong push toward the skimmer.

Fitting them

Each eyeball threads into the return fitting in the wall. Check the thread on what you are pulling out, because a 1-1/2 inch fitting is the common size but it is not the only one in the ground. Once they are in, take a minute to aim them. Returns pointed slightly down and around the pool keep the whole surface moving toward the skimmer, and that does more for water clarity than most owners expect.
