What the canister basket does
A leaf canister goes in the vacuum line ahead of the pump so that heavy debris is caught before it ever reaches the strainer pot. The basket is the part doing that work. Everything else in the canister is a housing to hold it.
When to replace it
Baskets crack at the rim and split along the mesh, usually after being emptied hundreds of times and left in the sun between uses. A basket with a hole in it passes leaves through to the pump, which means shorter runs between strainer cleanings and, on a bad day, a clogged impeller. If you can see daylight through the side of the basket, replace it.
