This is the Val-Pak skimmer diverter, part number V34-124, in anthracite.

What the diverter does

The diverter is the piece inside the skimmer that decides where the pump pulls from. Turned one way it draws through the skimmer, turned the other it opens the main drain or the vacuum line. When it cracks, warps or goes missing, the pump ends up drawing from both sides at once. The symptom owners notice is weak skimming, or a manual vacuum that never quite builds suction.
