What the diffuser does
The diffuser is the shaped housing that sits over the impeller. Water leaves the impeller at speed and in every direction, and the diffuser is what turns that into a controlled path out into the volute and toward the discharge. When the diffuser cracks or its face wears, some of that flow simply recirculates inside the pump. The motor works just as hard and the pressure gauge reads lower.
Fitting notes
The diffuser comes off with the wet end, which puts the impeller and the shaft seal in reach at the same time. Look at the diffuser o-ring while you are there. A seal that has gone hard will leak as soon as the pump is closed back up, and it is a small part to replace next to the labor of opening the pump twice.
