What the diffuser does
The diffuser sits over the impeller and shapes the water leaving it, turning speed into pressure as the flow moves into the volute. It is a quiet part of the pump in the sense that it has no moving pieces, but a cracked or worn one costs real flow.
How you know it is worn
Diffusers wear at the face that runs closest to the impeller, and they crack around the mounting features. A pump that has lost flow without an obvious blockage, a bad seal or a worn impeller is worth opening to look at the diffuser.
