What a retaining ring does

A retaining ring is the piece that keeps an assembly seated where it belongs. It is small and inexpensive, and it is easy to overlook, but a ring that has been stretched, nicked or bent no longer holds position properly and lets the parts it captures shift while the pump runs. If yours came out damaged, or did not come out at all, replace it rather than reusing it.
