Why it matters
Everything upstream of the impeller runs under vacuum, so the trap lid seal is the one part standing between the pump and a lungful of air. When the ring goes hard, flattens or splits, the pump draws air past the lid instead of water from the pool, and the symptom owners notice is a pump that will not hold prime or a basket that never fills.
Fitting
