Why it matters more than it looks
This ring is the only thing keeping the suction side of the pump airtight at the lid. Once it hardens, flattens or takes a set from years of being clamped down, air gets pulled in past it. The pot fills with bubbles, the pump struggles to prime, and flow to the filter drops off. Owners often start pulling the pump apart when a two dollar seal is the whole problem.
Fitting it
Take the lid off, lift the old ring out of its groove and clean the groove out. Wipe a silicone based O-ring lubricant around the new ring, seat it evenly all the way round, and refit the lid. The lubricant is worth using: it helps the ring seal on first start and keeps it from sticking to the lid the next time you empty the basket.
