This is the Jacuzzi strainer basket assembly, part 16109704R, carrying the OEM number 16-1097-04 with 9978 molded into the basket. It is supplied complete with its flapper for the Magnum family of pumps.

What the basket does

Everything the skimmer misses arrives at the pump. The strainer basket is the last catch point before the impeller, and it holds leaves, twigs, acorns and grit that would otherwise pack the impeller vanes or lodge in the plumbing downstream. A basket that has split or lost a section is not doing that job, even though the pump still runs and the lid still seals.

Does this fit my Magnum Force?

The source material lists it for the Magnum, Magnum Plus, Magnum Force and Magnum Force 3. One line in the same material narrows it to pumps built prior to 2003, so measure your old basket against the dimensions above before ordering.

How do I check that it is the right basket?

Measure the one you have. This basket is 5-13/16 inches across the top outside, 5-1/8 inches across the top inside, 5 inches across the bottom outside and 8-3/4 inches tall. The number 9978 is molded into the original.

Does it come with the flapper?

Yes. It is supplied as a strainer basket assembly with the flapper fitted.

Can I run the pump without a basket for a while?

It is not worth it. The basket is the only thing between leaves and stones and the impeller, and a clogged or damaged impeller is a far larger job than replacing a basket.
