What the impeller does
The impeller is the spinning vane set inside the pump volute. It is what actually moves water, so the flow reaching the filter, the heater and the returns is set by its condition. Vanes wear over the years, and the narrow passages between them catch hair, grit and small debris.
When to change it
The classic sign is a pump that starts and runs normally, with a clean strainer basket and a clean filter, but noticeably weaker flow at the returns than it used to have. That points at the impeller rather than the motor.
