This is the Pentair 39006600 diffuser gasket for American Products Ultra-Flow pool pumps, molded in rubber. It also appears under the references 2-231 and O-244.
What it seals
The diffuser sits over the impeller and directs water into the volute. The gasket between them is what stops water taking a short cut back around the diffuser instead of going out the discharge. A flattened or split gasket costs flow, and in a pump that struggles to hold prime it is one of the first cheap parts to rule out.
Rebuild part
Because it only comes out when the pump is already apart, most people fit a new one alongside the shaft seal and any o-rings rather than reusing a gasket that has already taken a set.
