The Val-Pak V38-185 is a heavy duty strainer basket for Pentair American Products Ultra-Flow and Americana pumps built after October 1987. It replaces original part number 39303500.

Check the date first

American Products changed the basket on these pumps in October 1987. This is the later basket, so if your pump predates that you need the earlier version. The listed dimensions are the fastest way to settle it: top outside diameter 6-1/2 inches, top inside dimension 5-1/8 inches, height 8-11/16 inches and bottom outside dimension 5-1/8 inches.

Why heavy duty is worth it

The basket is the last filter before the impeller. Thin baskets go brittle in the sun, then crack or collapse under a full load of leaves, and everything they were holding back goes straight into the wet end. A heavier basket holds its shape through the seasons where it matters.

Replacing a damaged basket is a two minute job with the pump off and the lid removed, and it is the cheapest insurance on the equipment pad.
