What it seals
The funnel adapter has to make a tight joint with the body of the cleaner. The gasket is what makes that joint. It is a small piece and easy to overlook, but a cleaner that has lost its gasket, or is running on one that has flattened out, leaks at exactly the point where it should be pulling hardest.
When to change it
Whenever the funnel adapter comes off. A gasket that has taken a set will not reseal properly once it has been disturbed, and it is far cheaper than a second teardown.
