What it does
The assembly sits at the bottom of the tank, buried in the sand bed. Water passes down through the media and is collected by the slotted laterals, which feed it back up the standpipe and out to the pool. The slots are sized to pass water and hold the sand back.
When it needs replacing
Split or cracked laterals send sand out to the returns. Because the assembly lives under the media, reaching it means emptying the tank, so it is normal to fit new sand at the same time.
