Why laterals get replaced
Laterals live at the bottom of the filter tank under the sand. They are what keeps media in the tank while water passes through. Once one cracks or splits, sand starts finding its way back to the pool through the returns, and no amount of backwashing fixes it.

Reaching the laterals means opening the filter and getting the sand out, so it is not a five minute swap. Since the tank is open anyway, look over the bulkhead o-ring and the bottom elbow assembly while you are in there and replace anything that is tired.
