What the laterals do
The laterals sit at the bottom of the tank and collect the water that has passed down through the sand bed. Their slots are sized to let water through while holding the media back. When one cracks or splits, sand escapes into the plumbing and shows up at the return jets, which is usually the first symptom an owner notices.

The umbrella style laterals fold in so the assembly can pass through the tank opening, then open out once inside. Because the assembly lives under the sand bed, the media has to be removed to reach it, so it is worth pairing the repair with a fresh charge of sand.
