The Hayward SX164DAS is a 16 inch folding lateral assembly for Hayward pool filters. It replaces the older SX164DA part number.
What it does
Laterals sit at the bottom of the filter tank and control how water leaves it. Their job is to draw water evenly through the whole media bed instead of letting it channel down one path, which is what keeps the filter actually filtering rather than just passing water.
The folding design
A 16 inch span will not fit through a filter opening rigid. The assembly folds for installation and opens out to full width once it is inside the tank.
Service
This is a replaceable part. It comes out for cleaning and inspection whenever the filter is opened, and cracked or broken laterals are the usual reason media ends up back in the pool.
