Product details

The Hayward SX244DAS is the 24 inch folding lateral assembly for Pro Series sand filters, listed for the S244T, S244TC and S270T2. It is the genuine Hayward part.

What the laterals do

The lateral assembly sits at the base of the filter tank, under the sand. Filtered water has to pass through the slots in the laterals to leave the tank, and because those slots are spread evenly across the bottom, water is pulled down through the entire media bed rather than one narrow path. That even draw is what prevents channeling, where water carves a route through the sand and comes out barely filtered.

Why it is folding

A tank opening is far smaller than the spread of the finished assembly. The folding design lets the arms collapse toward the center to get through the opening, then open out into their working position inside the tank.

The symptom

Sand coming back into the pool through the returns almost always means a lateral has cracked or a slot has opened. Once media is passing through, the assembly is replaced rather than repaired.

Which filters does this fit?

Why is it called folding?
The lateral arms fold in toward the center so the whole assembly fits through the filter tank opening. Once inside, they open out into position across the bottom of the tank.
I am getting sand in the pool. Is this the fix?
It is the usual cause. When a lateral cracks or a slot opens up, sand passes straight into the underdrain and out through the returns.
What does the lateral assembly actually do?
It sits at the base of the filter tank and spreads water evenly through the media, which is what keeps the whole sand bed filtering instead of one channel through it.
