What laterals do
At the bottom of a sand filter, a set of slotted arms fans out from the standpipe. Those are the laterals. The slots are cut fine enough to let filtered water through while holding the sand bed above them, and they are the only thing keeping several hundred pounds of media out of your plumbing. When one cracks or a slot opens up, sand pours through the break and lands in the pool through the returns.

Why a pack of ten
Replacing laterals means getting the sand out of the tank, which is the slow and awkward part of the job. All the laterals in a filter have been in service for the same length of time, so if one has failed the others are not far behind. A full set means the underdrain goes back together new and the job does not have to be repeated in a season or two. While the tank is open, check the standpipe as well, since a cracked pipe puts sand in the pool exactly the same way.
