The Hayward SX180DAS is the folding lateral assembly for an 18 inch sand filter, supplied as a complete assembly.

Why they fold

The laterals fold inward so the whole assembly can be fed through the filter opening. Without that, a rebuild would mean getting a fixed spread of arms through a hole narrower than the assembly itself.

What laterals do

They sit at the bottom of the tank and let filtered water out while holding the sand back. When one cracks, sand starts passing into the plumbing and returning to the pool, which is normally how an owner finds out.
