Product details

The Hayward SWX256DA2 is the lateral assembly with center pipe for the SwimPro SW256T sand filter. It is the genuine Hayward part and it comes complete, laterals and standpipe together.

What the laterals do

The lateral assembly sits at the bottom of the filter tank, buried under the sand bed. Each lateral arm is slotted finely enough to let filtered water through while holding the sand back. Water passes into them, up the center pipe and out to the returns.

The symptom

Sand appearing in the pool, especially after a backwash, points to a cracked or split lateral. Once one arm fails, sand goes straight up the standpipe and into the pool no matter how the valve is set.

Doing the job

Reaching the assembly means emptying the sand out of the tank, so most people replace the media at the same time. Hayward lists this assembly as limited availability, so it is worth having the part in hand before opening the filter.

Which filter does this fit?

The Hayward SwimPro SW256T sand filter. It appears in the SwimPro sand filter parts diagram covering the SW196T, SW236T and SW256T, and this assembly is the SW256T part.

Does the center pipe come with it?

Yes. This is the lateral assembly complete with its center pipe.

Why is sand blowing back into my pool?

Almost always a cracked lateral. The laterals are slotted so water passes and sand does not. Once one splits, sand travels straight up the standpipe and out the returns.

Do I have to remove the sand to change it?

Yes. The assembly sits at the bottom of the tank under the sand bed, so the sand has to come out to reach it. It is a good moment to replace the media.
