The Pentair 152228 is the genuine stand pipe assembly for the Sand Dollar SD40 sand filter. Pentair also lists it for Sta-Rite Crystal-Flo II sand filters manufactured after October 2004.
What the stand pipe does
The stand pipe runs up the center of a top mount sand filter. The laterals attach at its base, sitting down in the sand bed, and the pipe carries filtered water up through the media to the valve. Everything about the filter working correctly depends on that path being sealed. If the pipe cracks, or a lateral breaks away from it, unfiltered water and sand take the short route to the valve and end up back in the pool.
Check the date first
Sta-Rite changed the Crystal-Flo II part partway through its production run. This assembly covers filters built after October 2004, so read the build date on the tank label before ordering rather than going by the model name alone.
