The Waterway 505-2060 is the lateral and manifold assembly for the 22 in Clearwater top mount sand filter. Laterals and manifold come as one assembly, so the whole underdrain is replaced together.
What the assembly does
It sits under the sand bed. The manifold distributes water across the tank so the sand filters evenly instead of channeling, and the slotted laterals let filtered water out while holding the sand in. Both halves of that job matter, and both fail in the same part.
The symptom
Sand in the pool after backwashing, or sand blowing through the returns, almost always means a lateral has cracked or a slot has opened up. No amount of valve work fixes that; the assembly has to come out.
Doing the job
Getting to the assembly means opening the tank and removing the sand, which is the bulk of the work. Since the sand is already out, most people put fresh media in at the same time rather than shoveling the old sand back.
