What the barb does
The sweep hose attaches to the cleaner at this barb. Everything the sweep hose does, the constant whipping across the pool floor that keeps debris moving toward the cleaner, is transmitted through this one fitting. It works hard and it is a normal wear item.
When to replace it
A cracked barb or a tired O-ring leaks pressure that should be driving the sweep hose. The symptom is a sweep hose that lies limp or moves weakly while the rest of the cleaner still runs. Fitting a fresh barb complete restores the flow to the hose.
