Product details

The CaliMar CMARVSP1.5 is the 1.5 HP model in CaliMar's CMARVSP variable speed line for inground pools. It runs on 230V single phase at 50 or 60 Hz, from 450 to 3,450 RPM, with 2 in. ports for suction and discharge, and ENERGY STAR certifies it with a WEF of 8.3.

Motor and pump

The motor is CaliMar's premium efficiency variable speed design, totally enclosed and fan cooled (TEFC). One molded piece forms the volute and the strainer pot, which CaliMar says keeps hydraulic noise down, and the basket shows through a see-through lid. The controller enclosure is rated IPX6, and the pump is ETL listed for the US and Canada.

Controls

From the keypad you set the clock, four speeds and their run times for the day, a Quick Clean speed and the priming speed. As shipped it starts at 8 am with 3,000 RPM for 2 hours, then 1,500 for 10, 2,500 for 2 and 1,000 for 4, and rests for the other 6 hours. CaliMar's guide describes no automation speed inputs for this pump, so a timer or relay can switch its power, not its speed.

Before you buy

CaliMar's curve puts it at about 80 GPM against 50 feet of head at full speed. It draws 7 A at 230V and is wired in permanently by a licensed electrician on a GFCI protected circuit. CaliMar warrants it for one year on materials and workmanship in residential use, for the original buyer; commercial use voids the warranty and labor is not covered.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

Is the CaliMar CMARVSP1.5 ENERGY STAR certified?
Yes. ENERGY STAR's record for the CMARVSP1.5 certifies it as an in-ground, self-priming pool filter pump with a weighted energy factor (WEF) of 8.3 kgal/kWh, against the 6.48 minimum the record shows for it. CaliMar's own guide prints no WEF, so that figure comes from the ENERGY STAR record.
What priming speed should a CaliMar CMARVSP1.5 be set to?
CaliMar gives no single figure. Speed 1 doubles as the priming speed, and the guide asks the installer to set it fast enough to prime a fresh install without wasting energy, noting that most installs prime below 3,450 RPM. Test it more than once in manual mode, letting the water drain out between tries, and use the time the pump housing needs to fill to set how long speed 1 runs.
Can a CaliMar CMARVSP1.5 be used on a spa or hot tub?
Only one it is marked for. CaliMar's guide limits the pump to permanently installed pools, adding that it can also run a spa or hot tub when the pump is marked for that use; storable pools are out. It should not go inside an outer enclosure or under a spa skirt unless marked for it either, and it sits at least 5 feet from the inside wall of the pool or spa.
Does a CaliMar CMARVSP1.5 need a check valve?
Sometimes. CaliMar's guide calls for a check valve on the discharge line wherever the plumbing climbs well above the pump after it, and for check valves whenever the pump is plumbed in parallel with another, so neither impeller is driven backwards. A flooded suction system should also have gate valves on suction and discharge, the suction one at least five pipe diameters from the pump.
