What it does
A nipple is the simplest fitting there is: a short threaded stub that joins two female ports. In this position it carries flow away from the pump toward the cleaner line, which means anything wrong with it takes pressure straight out of the cleaner.
Fitting it
Pipe thread seals on the thread, not on a shoulder, so it needs PTFE tape or a suitable thread sealant. Resist the urge to keep turning: threaded plastic fittings split when they are overtightened, and a cracked nipple is a slow leak that shows up weeks later as a cleaner that has quietly lost its drive.
While you are there
If the old fitting was leaking, look at what it threaded into as well. Sealant that has hardened, or a female port that has been stressed by an overtightened nipple, will leak again with a new part in place.
