Why the seal matters
A leaf canister is plumbed into the suction line ahead of the pump, so everything inside it is under vacuum. When the lid o-ring hardens or splits, the canister pulls air rather than water. The symptoms look like a cleaner problem: slow travel, a cleaner that stalls, bubbles at the returns and a pump basket that will not stay full. The seal is usually the cause.
The part that wears first
The lid on a leaf canister comes off every time the basket is emptied, which is more often than any other seal in the system gets disturbed.
