What refractory does
Refractory is the heat resistant lining around the combustion area. It keeps burner heat directed into the heat exchanger and off the surrounding metal. As it ages it cracks, crumbles at the edges or burns back, and once that starts the heater loses efficiency and the surrounding parts take heat they were never meant to take.
