The Raypak 004087F is the sensor well for the ELS 552-2 5.5 kW and ELS 1102-2 11 kW electric pool heaters. It is the genuine Raypak part.
What it does
The heater has to know the water temperature, but putting an electrical sensor directly into the water would be a maintenance problem. Instead the sensor sits inside a closed sleeve, the well, that reaches into the water passage. Heat passes through the wall of the well to the sensor. The arrangement means the sensor can be pulled and replaced without draining anything or disturbing a water seal.
When to replace it
The well is in constant contact with pool water, so it takes the abuse. Corrosion pits it and eventually opens a leak path at the threads or through the wall. Heavy scale inside the well is the other failure: it acts as insulation, the sensor reads slow, and the heater short cycles or overshoots. Replacing the well restores both the seal and an accurate reading.
