What the basket does

Everything the skimmer misses ends up here. The strainer basket is the last filter between the pool and the impeller, and it catches leaves, hair and the grit that would otherwise jam or wear the wet end. It is a cheap part standing in front of an expensive one.

When to replace it

Baskets are consumable. Sun and pool chemistry make the plastic brittle, and eventually the mesh cracks or the rim distorts so it no longer seats. Once that happens the basket is passing debris straight through, whether or not it looks broken from above, so change it rather than keep using it.
