What a multiport does
The multiport is the valve that gives a sand filter its modes. One handle position sends water through the sand to filter, another reverses it to backwash, another rinses the bed after a backwash, and the rest cover waste, recirculate and closed. All of that comes from a rotor turning inside a single valve body.
When the whole valve is the answer
Multiports wear from the inside. Once the sealing surface is worn or the body is cracked, water passes between ports whatever the handle is set to, and the usual sign is water running to waste while the filter is supposedly filtering. That is the point where the valve gets replaced instead of rebuilt.

This is the 2 inch valve. Side mount sand filters are also built with 1-1/2 inch ports, so confirm the port size on your tank before ordering.
