The Pentair E-12-S2 is the spider gasket for 2 in multiport valves. It is the rubber seal that sits inside the valve body and divides the ports.
What it does
A multiport valve works by rotating a key against this gasket. The arms of the gasket seal off the ports you are not using, which is how one handle can mean filter, backwash, rinse, waste, recirculate or closed. There is nothing else in the valve doing that job.
How you know it is worn
The symptom almost everyone meets first is water running out of the waste line while the handle is set to filter, or the pool level dropping for no visible reason. That is the gasket failing to seal one port from the next. Rubber under constant compression takes a set with time, so this is a wear part rather than a fault.
