What it does
The high limit is the heater safety that watches heat exchanger temperature and cuts the burner at 150F. It is what stands between a heater with poor flow and a damaged exchanger, so it is not a part to bypass or jumper out to get a season out of a heater.
Before you replace it
A high limit that keeps tripping is usually reporting a real problem rather than failing on its own. Low flow from a dirty filter, a closed valve, a failing pump or a partly blocked exchanger will all trip it. Check those first, and if the switch itself is open with everything else normal, this is the Pentair replacement.
