What the igniter does
On a hot surface ignition heater the control energizes the igniter, the element glows to light off temperature, and the gas valve opens onto it. Every cycle takes a little life out of the element. Eventually it stops getting hot enough, and the heater goes through the whole start sequence without ever lighting.
